Chapter 1: Death and Emptiness
A family from Bethlehem takes refuge across the Jordan in Moab in a time of famine. The father dies, and so do his sons, after marrying Orpah and Ruth, Moabite girls. Naomi finally decides to return to Bethlehem, and in spite of her mother-in-law's objections, Ruth comes with her.

Chapter 2: Seeking Short-Term Security
Ruth, to feed herself and Naomi, goes with other poor people to glean in the fields, and meets Boaz, a wealthy and pious land-owner, who praises her for her devotion to her mother-in-law.

Chapter 3: Seeking Permanent Security
Naomi, recognizing that Boaz stands in a special relation to her husband, devises a scheme for Ruth to explore marriage with Boaz, and Boaz agrees, subject to one legal hurdle.

Chapter 4: Redemption and Fulness
