{"id":2825,"date":"2025-04-01T07:25:52","date_gmt":"2025-04-01T11:25:52","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cyber-chapel.org\/blog\/?p=2825"},"modified":"2025-04-02T06:43:15","modified_gmt":"2025-04-02T10:43:15","slug":"the-righteousness-of-god","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cyber-chapel.org\/blog\/the-righteousness-of-god\/","title":{"rendered":"The Righteousness of God"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Paul repeatedly describes our salvation as the imputation to us of \u201cthe righteousness of God.&#8221; We often think of this as a distinctively New Testament doctrine, but (as usually turns out to be the case) Paul is drawing on a teaching that is well developed in the Old Testament.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<p>Recall Paul&#8217;s emphasis that believers are accepted before God, not for their own righteousness, but because of &#8220;the righteousness of God&#8221; that he has given them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p style=\"margin-right:var(--wp--preset--spacing--20);margin-left:var(--wp--preset--spacing--20)\">Rom 3:22 Even <strong>the righteousness of God <\/strong>which is by faith of Jesus Christ unto all and upon all them that believe: for there is no difference:<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>Php 3:9 And be found in him, not having mine own righteousness, which is of the law, but that which is through the faith of Christ, <strong>the righteousness which is of God <\/strong>by faith:<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>And he also emphasizes that this righteousness is embodied in a Person, the Lord Jesus: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>1Co 1:30 But of him are ye in <strong>Christ Jesus<\/strong>, who of God is made unto us wisdom, and <strong>righteousness<\/strong>, and sanctification, and redemption:<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>2Co 5:21 For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made <strong>the<\/strong> <strong>righteousness of God in him.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>This linkage of God\u2019s righteousness with the salvation of his people is deeply rooted in the OT.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>Psa 40:10 I have not hid <strong>thy righteousness <\/strong>within my heart; <br>I have declared thy faithfulness and <strong>thy salvation<\/strong>:<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>Psa 71:15 My mouth shall shew forth <strong>thy righteousness <\/strong>and <strong>thy salvation <\/strong>all the day;<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>Psa 98:2 The LORD hath made known <strong>his salvation<\/strong>: <br><strong>his righteousness <\/strong>hath he openly shewed in the sight of the heathen.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>Psa. 119:123 Mine eyes fail for thy <strong>salvation<\/strong>, <br>and for <strong>the word of thy righteousness<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>Isa 46:13 I bring near <strong>my righteousness<\/strong>; it shall not be far off, <br>and <strong>my salvation <\/strong>shall not tarry:<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>Isa 51:4 Hearken unto me, my people; and give ear unto me, O my nation: <br>for a law shall proceed from me, and I will make my judgment to rest for a light of the people.<br>5 <strong>My righteousness <\/strong>is near; <strong>my salvation <\/strong>is gone forth, and mine arms shall judge the people; <br>the isles shall wait upon me, and on mine arm shall they trust.<br>6 Lift up your eyes to the heavens, and look upon the earth beneath:<br>for the heavens shall vanish away like smoke, and the earth shall wax old like a garment, and they that dwell therein shall die in like manner:<br>but <strong>my salvation <\/strong>shall be for ever, <br>and <strong>my righteousness <\/strong>shall not be abolished.<br>7 Hearken unto me, ye that know righteousness, the people in whose heart is my law;<br>fear ye not the reproach of men, neither be ye afraid of their revilings.<br>8 For the moth shall eat them up like a garment, and the worm shall eat them like wool: <br>but <strong>my righteousness <\/strong>shall be for ever, and <strong>my salvation <\/strong>from generation to generation.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>Isa 56:1 <strong>my salvation <\/strong>is near to come, and <strong>my righteousness <\/strong>to be revealed. <\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>And in fact Jeremiah twice announces the remarkable name, \u201cthe Lord our righteousness\u201d:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>Jer 23:6 In his days Judah shall be saved, and Israel shall dwell safely: and this is his name whereby he shall be called, <strong>THE LORD OUR RIGHTEOUSNESS<\/strong>. [cf. 33:16]<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>This statement closely anticipates Paul\u2019s assertion that the Lord Jesus himself is the righteousness by which we \u201cdwell safely\u201d in the presence of a holy God.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In other words, what saves God\u2019s people, according to the widespread testimony of the OT, is the righteousness of God.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This claim could be understood simply to mean that because God is righteous, he keeps his ancient promises to send a deliverer for his people. This is a true statement. But this idea is more naturally expressed by associating salvation with his lovingkindness \u05d7\u05e1\u05d3 (<em>xesed <\/em>H2617, that is, his loyal love) or his faithfulness \u05d0\u05de\u05d5\u05e0\u05d4 (<em>emunah <\/em>H530), and the OT is perfectly capable of saying this, in so many words:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>2Sam. 22:51 He is the tower of <strong>salvation <\/strong>for his king: <br>and sheweth <strong>mercy <\/strong><em>xesed <\/em>to his anointed, <br>unto David, and to his seed for evermore.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>Is. 33:6 And wisdom and knowledge shall be the <strong>stability <\/strong><em>emunah <\/em>of thy times, <br>and strength of <strong>salvation<\/strong>: <br>the fear of the LORD is his treasure.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>Psa. 13:5 But I have trusted in thy <strong>mercy <\/strong><em>xesed<\/em>; my heart shall rejoice in thy <strong>salvation<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>Psa. 69:13 But as for me, my prayer is unto thee, O LORD, in an acceptable time: <br>O God, in the multitude of thy <strong>mercy <\/strong><em>xesed <\/em>hear me, in the truth of thy <strong>salvation<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>Psa. 85:7 Shew us thy <strong>mercy <\/strong><em>xesed<\/em>, O LORD, and grant us thy <strong>salvation<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>Psa. 98:3 He hath remembered his <strong>mercy <\/strong><em>xesed <\/em>and his truth <em>emunah <\/em>toward the house of Israel: <br>all the ends of the earth have seen the <strong>salvation <\/strong>of our God.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>Psa. 119:41 Let thy <strong>mercies <\/strong><em>xesed <\/em>come also unto me, O LORD, even thy <strong>salvation<\/strong>, according to thy word.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>How has God carried out his loyal love and his faithfulness in saving his people? The OT and NT agree that he does so by giving us his own righteousness. Psalm 40 combines all of these concepts, God&#8217;s righteousness, his faithfulness, and his loyal love, combining to bring us salvation:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>Psa. 40:10 I have not hid thy <strong>righteousness<\/strong> within my heart; I have declared thy <strong>faithfulness <\/strong><em>emunah <\/em>and thy <strong>salvation<\/strong>: I have not concealed thy <strong>lovingkindness <\/strong><em>xesed <\/em>and thy truth from the great congregation.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Jeremiah may have pondered just how the Lord himself could be our righteousness, but he faithfully asserted what the Spirit of Christ revealed to him, and Paul shows us how God has done this, by sending his Son to execute the complete transaction, taking our sin upon himself and clothing us with his perfect obedience. Thus we are &#8220;accepted in the Beloved&#8221; (Eph 1:6).<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Paul emphasizes that our salvation comes through the imputation of &#8220;the righteousness of God,&#8221; intimately linked to faith in Jesus Christ.
