Bible Study Principles

Over the course of thirty years of Bible exposition, I find that a fairly limited set of tools and techniques consistently yields good insights. I mentioned this to my wife one day, and she said, “You should write them down for people.” So I did.

You can find the list here. It outlines six basic principles. I’ll try to tag each post with a key word from the principle that it exemplifies (indicated in bold in the first column of the list, repeated as the summary list below).

  1. Understand the nature of the Bible.
  2. Stick to the Bible.
  3. Watch your words.
  4. Diagram sentences and paragraphs.
  5. Pay attention to repetition.
  6. Find the Bible’s comments on itself.
